Why volunteer?

These events cannot exist without community effort. Volunteering is not only a way to support these gatherings, but it’s also a lot of fun! These aren’t “jobs” in the classic sense. These are opportunities to interact with people on a deeper level, and to uphold a framework of creativity and freedom.

Skill Points

Each volunteer role has unique requirements. We use a skill point system as a summary of what qualities you will need to succeed in each role. Each skill point is rated on a 0-20 scale, with 20 being the most important quality/requirement. If you’re familiar with D&D, you might recognize some of these terms! 😉 Note that these ratings are very loose, and designed as a fun reference, and are not to be taken literally.

Read Descriptions for Each Skill Point

In life, everything we do builds up our skill points for various things. So if you’re always talking to people, you will have higher skill points in Charisma. If you work out all the time, your Strength skill points will be higher. Obviously this is an abstraction, but just try to match what you feel makes the most sense.

Strength

This one’s easy. Can you pick up heavy things and put them down, without hurting yourself or others? This skill point mostly relates to setup and strike procedures.

Dexterity

This skill mostly relates to driving skills at our events, but also involves being quick on your feet.

Constitution

How well do you deal with emergencies? What about rude/angry people? Can you keep cool no matter what? Constitution in the case of an AITP volunteer means that you are reliable and have a tough mind.

Intelligence

Planning and following the process is how we create our magic. This skill point depends on your ability to read and understand directions, relay information to others, and pay attention to very small details.

Wisdom

Can you read the room and respond to unique situations appropriately? Wisdom is the result of experience, and learning from mistakes. At our events, this means paying attention to your surroundings and keeping people safe, based on what you know.

Charisma

This one’s all about your people skills. You don’t need to be an extrovert, but you do need to be comfortable talking to people, guiding attendees, and ensuring everyone follows the rules. A positive attitude is really important for this one.
