Character Lore
Kobayashi Mito-kun is a lively, spirited wolfgirl with a passion for the environment. She loves to hike in all sorts of forests and parks, and knows very many details about the various plants and animals that can be found across Florida. She loves to teach others about these organisms and how they impact the world, and is insistent that every living thing has value, even if it can’t immediately be seen. During her hikes, Mito-kun takes along her grabber tool to clean up any litter that she finds along the way in order to dispose of it properly. Cleaning up the environment makes her feel helpful and fulfilled. She is very personable to others and likes to compete with her friends in different games, but has very good sportsmanship because she is happy for the winner, no matter who that may be. It’s not uncommon to see her napping in the grass under the shade of a tree at the end of a long day.
Inspiration
Mito-kun is inspired by the TERRA Environmental Research school, which is the school that is adjacent to Kendall Indian Hammocks Park. The school focuses on the use of STEM programs to understand and to better the world around us. She is part wolf because TERRA’s mascot is a wolf. Her belt buckle is in the shape of a leaf that can be found in the park, and is a reference to how tanukis use leaves to disguise themselves as humans in Japanese folklore. Her short, scruffy hair and lip ring show her spunk and zest for adventure. “Kobayashi” means “small forest,” and “Mito” means “beautiful ground:” both in reference to the size and beauty of the park.
